QIPCO Falmouth Stakes (British Champions Series) (Fillies’ Group 1) (Class 1) (3YO plus)
Winner £113,420 – 7 run
Advice: 1 pt win Sky Lantern (10/3 general)
Certify: In season when well beaten at Meydan in February but showed less than nothing on her UK comeback at Royal Ascot behind Integral; Possible that she improves for that but would need to seriously improve to get involved here.
Integral: Fast improver who has 4 wins from seven races, 6 of them in patters company; Second to Sky Lantern last year after dead heating in Listed race and then a fine second on return (Rowley Mile) in Group 3 before comprehensively winning Duke of Cambridge Stakes in fine style there last time; Can go well, but unraced on worse than good to soft.
Peace Burg: Just over 6 lengths behind Integral at Royal Ascot but hasn’t seen her best form for three starts since making a good comeback and beaten long way over 10 furlongs latest; Hard to be enthusiastic about their chances.
Purr Along: Only fourth in this last year when race turned into a sprint and struggled to regain best form afterwards; Much better shape this season, winning Curragh Group 3 in fine style and then coming from right out the back to be third to Integral at Ascot (further back than either her or Sky Lantern); Should go well today with cut in the ground a help to her chances.
Sky Lantern: Best of the 3yo female milers last year, winning Guineas and then trashing rivals in Coronation Stakes; Outsprinted by top female miler when second in 4 runner renewal but no shame in that or not staying 10 furlongs fully at Goodwood in Nassau; Beat Integral in Sun Chariot Stakes, and being only 5 and a half lengths behind Stoute charge on return at Royal Ascot; Expect to strip much fitter and also 5lbs better off; Worry that she too would want top of the ground but respected.
Kiyoshi: Leading 2yo form puts her a lot closer to Rizzena than her Coronation Stakes effort, a poor return by her standards but one that can be forgiven as it was her seasonal comeback; Previously a wide margin winner of Albany Stakes and then close up second in the Moyglare at the Curragh; Interesting.
Rizzena: One of the best 2 year olds last year and while a big disappointment on her return in the Guineas, and much better when back to her best in the Coronation at Ascot, showing sharp speed under fine ride to beat a tightly matched field in behind; Likely slow gallop not a harm to her but Coronational was missing a Guineas winner in renewal.
VERDICT: The 3yo form meets the older horses for the first time and for all Kiyoshi’s promise and Rizzena’s speed, the older horses are preferred with SKY LANTERN given the nod over Integral although Purr Along has had the rain come for her and will be a big threat having improved and stripped fitter than she did at Ascot with a 5lbs pull thanks to a penalty she incurred for her Sun Chariot win not applying today.
