Glorious Goodwood 2014 – Nassau Stakes

3.15 Glorious Goodwood

Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes (British Champions Series) (Fillies’ Group 1) (Class 1)  (3YO plus)
Winner £113,420

Advice: 1 pt win, 2 pts place Venus De Milo (11/4 general, 10/11 general)

Owner detailsMango Diva: Ended last season with wins at Salisbury and Gowran in Listed and Group 3 company; Decent return at York and then overcame Epsom disappointment with Group 2 win at the Curragh when she got up in the nick of time (overcame trouble in running); Chance here although this harder.

Owner detailsNairyn: Extremely progressive over the last year, twice a Group 3 winner in taking style; Not disgraced on first try in Group 1 company against Males at Saint Cloud but keen early, took her time to get going, and didn’t threatened over 12 furlongs; Worry that this her first start on quick ground and that a sharp 10 furlongs might not be what she wants but leading form player.

Owner detailsSultania: Rapidly progressive, going straight from maiden to Group 3 win ay Haydock and then better again when second in the Yorkshire Oaks to stablemate Pomology; Can improve again still but not sure that 10 furlongs is what she wants.

Owner detailsVenus De Milo: Improved hand over fist last year, a Listed winner on second start before Irish Oaks third and then second in the Yorkshire Oaks later on; Put a couple of poor runs behind her to land the Munster Oaks in good style and creditable second in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh to Thistle Bird last time was a good effort that shows she should be comfortable enough at this trip today.

Owner detailsAmazing Maria: Took her time to get going as a juvenile but deeply impressive when she did so, winning maiden here (wide margin) and Prestige Stakes (impressively); Has not had a chance to show what she can do as 3yo yet, out the back after a much delayed reappearance in the Oaks, but this should suit much more and foolish to write off.

Owner detailsEastern Belle: Lead was dwindling rapidly but the post came in time for her to win Listed race at Newbury, building on her C&D second here the time before; This demands a while lot more and far more needed today.

Owner detailsLustrous: Relished step upto 12 furlongs when second in Ribblesdale but exposed in Irish Oaks next time and not sure that she now wants the drop back to 10 in what could be a slowly run race here and others make more appeal.

VERDICT: This doesn’t look to be a great renewal and several are in with a realistic chance. It could also be slowly run, which would not suit a good deal of the main contenders here either. The ground is riding very fast, as it has done all week, and that could really play against French raider Nairyn and into the hands of VENUS DE MILO, who should take some beating based on her second to Thsitle Bird last time.
