Qatar Prix Foy Stakes – Group 2 (Class 1) (4YO plus)
Advice: 1 pt win Flintshire (7/4 general)
Flintshire: Looked set for big things when an impressive winner of the Grand Prix De Paris last year but soft ground didn’t suit when fourth in the Niel and eights in the Arc; Fine seasonal return in Coronation Cup; Desperately poor in Grand Prix De Saint Cloud but that also on ground softer than he’d have wanted and important that he gets a fast surface today.
Ruler of the World: Derby winner last year in clear cut fashion and bounced back from Curragh disappointment to finish a close second in this last year (then eights in Arc); Only seen once this season, in Dubai World Cup when nothing went to plan; If back in best form, the one to beat, but so many questions over his performance.
Melegaros: Yet to win a pattern race and behind Flintshire and Spiritjim when last seen so others make more appeal.
Spiritjim: Proven to be rapidly progressive this year, taking a Listed, Group 3, 2 and Group 1, catching a flagging Noble Mission in the last strides; Disqualified for banned substance and off since, so possible wellbeing questions over him, but the leading form contender in any case.
Kingsbairns: Impressive winner of the Racing Post Trophy as a 2yo and appeared to retain all of that ability when third in the QEII last year (soft); Been below best in two runs so far this year and not sure this trip is what he wants although interesting that they’re willing to try it.
Au Revoir: Only a short head behind Spitirjum when second in a Listed race at Longchamp but well held the next time and looks below this class.
VERDICT: A hard race to rate with questions over the whole field, but the nature of the ground leads one to FLINTSHIRE, who can regain the winning thread on a fast surface. Spiritjim and Ruler of the World should be close at the finish.
